FAQ

It is a requirement, in connection with an application for a permanent residence permit, that you have been in full-time employment for at least 3 years and 6 months within the past 4 years. This means that, during the last 4 years, you may only have had 6 months of unemployment, that is, without full-time work. Full-time employment is defined as working at least 30 hours per week or 120 hours per month.

You only need to meet 2 out of the 4 additional requirements if you have legally resided in Denmark for at least 8 years. It is up to the applicant to choose which 2 of the additional requirements they wish to fulfill. However, if you have legally resided in Denmark for less than 8 years, it is a requirement that you meet all 4 additional conditions.

If you apply for a permanent residence permit within 3 months or less before your current residence permit expires, your application for permanent residence will also serve as an application for an extension of your residence permit. This means that if your application for permanent residence is rejected, it will instead be treated as an application for an extension of your current residence permit. In that case, you do not need to apply separately for an extension of your current residence permit.

On the other hand, if you apply for a permanent residence permit more than 3 months before your current residence permit expires, it will not function as an extension. Therefore, you will still need to apply for an extension of your current residence permit.

An application fee must always be paid to the Danish Immigration Service in connection with an application for a permanent residence permit. This is a fee charged by the Danish Immigration Service for processing the case.

If you have a residence permit based on relocation or family reunification, you must pay an application fee of DKK 4,835 (2023 level). If, on the other hand, your residence permit is based on work or studies, the application fee is DKK 7,355.

The expected maximum processing time at the Danish Immigration Service is 10 months.

– Your residence permit will automatically lapse if you give up your residence in Denmark, for example, if you sell or terminate your housing and do not intend to return to Denmark.

– Your permanent residence permit can also be revoked if you leave Denmark for more than 6 consecutive months. However, you have the option to apply for an exemption from the lapse of your residence permit before you leave. Any exemption granted will be for a maximum of 3 years.

– If you have held a permanent residence permit for more than the past 2 years, you may leave Denmark for up to 12 consecutive months without it affecting your permanent residence status.

– Your residence permit may also be revoked if you are expelled by court order.
