When do I meet the full-time employment requirement?

A condition for applying for a permanent residence permit is that you have been in full-time work for at least 3 years and 6 months out of the last 4 years. This means that in the last 4 years you can only have 6 months of unemployment (i.e. without full-time work). Full-time work means work of at least 30 hours per week or 120 hours per month.

Do I need to fulfill all the additional conditions?

You only need to fulfill 2 out of 4 of the additional conditions if you have resided legally in Denmark for at least 8 years. It is up to the applicant to choose which 2 of the additional conditions they wish to fulfill. However, if you have resided legally in Denmark for less than 8 years, it is a requirement that you fulfill all 4 additional conditions.

Do I need to apply for an extension of my current residence permit if I apply for permanent residence?

If you apply for a permanent residence permit within 3 months or less before the expiry of your current residence permit, your application for a permanent residence permit will also serve as an application to extend your residence permit. This means that if your application for a permanent residence permit is rejected, it will instead serve as an application for an extension of your current residence permit. In that case, you do not need to apply for an extension of your current residence permit. Conversely, if you apply for a permanent residence permit more than 3 months before the expiry of your current residence permit, it will not function as an extension and you will still need to apply for an extension of your current residence permit.

How much is the application fee?

An application fee must always be paid to the Danish Immigration Service in connection with an application for a permanent residence permit. This is a fee charged by the Immigration Service as payment for the case processing involved. If you have a residence permit as a refugee or family reunification, you must pay an application fee of DKK 4,835 (2023 level). On the other hand, if you have a residence permit on the basis of work or study, the application fee is DKK 7,355.

How long is the processing time for a permanent residence permit application?

The expected maximum processing time at the Immigration Service is 10 months.

Can you have your permanent residence permit revoked?

    - Your residence permit will automatically expire if you give up your residence in Denmark, e.g. if you sell or terminate your residence and have no intention of returning to Denmark.

    - You can also have your permanent residence permit revoked if you leave Denmark for more than 6 consecutive months. However, you can apply for an exemption from the revocation of your residence permit before you leave Denmark. Any exemption is granted for a maximum of 3 years.

    - If you have had a permanent residence permit for more than the last 2 years, you can leave Denmark for up to 12 consecutive months without affecting your permanent residence.

    - You can also have your residence permit revoked if you are expelled by court order.
